This month the Dutch Innovation Monitor 2020 got released. Around a thousand supervisors and leaders of Dutch organizations got surveyed on topics such as the Corona crisis, sustainability, digital transformation, and diversity. Besides that, organizations ranked themselves on topics as different forms of innovation, human-social capital, styles of leadership, investments in research & development (R&D), information & communication technology (ICT) and employee development. This report serves as a valuable overview of innovation in the Netherlands in these turbulent times. In this blog, we will discuss the most interesting findings.
Hope for recovery after the Corona crisis
The Corona crises affected Dutch businesses deeply. During the first ‘lock-down’ in the Netherlands (March – till the end of June) they asked the management of organizations when they think their turnover is at the same level as before the crisis. More than 80% indicated that they expect their turnover to be back on track within one year, some thought they will reach that goal in six months. This means, most organizations then assumed that this crisis will be over by March 2021. It is unknown if this goal is still possible, looking at all recent developments. In particular, large organizations/multinationals and organizations that have been around for a longer period of time, expect to recover more slowly.
”Organizations who are more digitized are making greater business results, have better sales growth, and they invest more in ICT, R&D and the employees”
Digital transformation focusses more on the adoption of new technical systems
The results show us as well that organizations are more focused on digital transformation than before, and in particular on the adoption of new technical systems. Digital transformation and adoption are ranked higher in priority then organizational changes or financial-strategic aspects. This suggests that Dutch organizations are digitizing, accelerated by the Corona crises. Which is a good thing. The result shows us that organizations who are more digitized are making greater business results, have better sales growth, and they invest more in ICT, R&D and the employees. Many organizations think that employment will increase as a result of digital developments.
”Leadership, social capital, and responsible entrepreneurship are indicative of organizations with good business performance”
Good leadership create better results
So organizations that are more active with exploitative innovation achieve better business performance, according to the results. However, that is not the only thing. The results are showing the importance of good leadership as well. Leadership, social capital, and responsible entrepreneurship are indicative of organizations with good business performance. Leaders who are paying attention to the development of their employees are also doing better. Multiple studies have shown that organizations who are actively involved with social issues have better reputations. All of this will lead to quicker adoption of innovation. The dynamics of the environment are a good predictor for all forms of innovation and the possibility to respond quickly to changes.
